# ERROR\_SERVICE\_DISABLED: How to Fix It on Windows

ERROR\_SERVICE\_DISABLED appears when a Windows service you need, usually Windows Update or BITS, is set to Disabled. Open services.msc, change that service's Startup type to Manual or Automatic, click Start, apply the change, then restart your PC and run Windows Update again.

#### Steps

1. Press Win + R, type `services.msc`, and hit Enter.
2. Scroll to **Windows Update** and double-click it.
3. Change **Startup type** from Disabled to Manual or Automatic.
4. Click **Start**, then **Apply** and **OK**.
5. Repeat steps 2 to 4 for **Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)**.
6. Restart your computer.
7. Go to Settings > Windows Update and click **Check for updates**.

#### Important Details

* ERROR\_SERVICE\_DISABLED is the named form of system error 1058, and 0x80070422 is the same problem shown as an error code in Windows Update.
* You need an administrator account to change service settings.
* Cleanup, "debloat" or performance-tweaking tools often disable services without telling you, so check whether you ran one recently.
* If Windows Update is already enabled, check **Cryptographic Services** and **Windows Update Medic Service** too, since updates depend on them.

#### Common Problems

* **Start button is greyed out:** Change Startup type first, click Apply, and the Start button becomes active.
* **Service starts, then stops again:** Open Command Prompt as administrator, run `sfc /scannow`, and restart when it finishes.
* **Error returns after a restart:** Set Startup type to Automatic and uninstall any tool that keeps switching services off.

#### FAQs

**Is this error caused by a virus?**\
Usually not, it just means a service is disabled. If you never disabled it yourself, run a full Windows Security scan to be safe.

**Is it safe to turn the Windows Update service back on?**\
Yes. It is a standard Windows service and needs to run for updates and security patches to install.

**Do I need to reinstall Windows?**\
No. Re-enabling the disabled service fixes the error in almost every case.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://fixerrors-now.gitbook.io/fixerrors-now-docs/error_service_disabled-how-to-fix-it-on-windows.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
